We took our 5 mo old Yorkie to Ms. Laken for her very first grooming appointment today. We really appreciate that she took the extra time and care with her to make sure that she could get used to the grooming tools as they were being used. Our girl was clean, well groomed and happy when we picked her up. We are so grateful that her first grooming experience was successful.

About

Hi, I’m Laken, the owner and groomer behind Mutt Makeovers Dog Spa. My connection with animals began long before grooming ever entered the picture. I grew up around farm animals, especially horses and dogs, and some of my earliest and most meaningful relationships were built with animals. I’ve always felt deeply connected to them, to nature, and to the world they experience in ways we sometimes overlook. I started working with dogs professionally at 16, when I got my first job at Heard County Animal Control. I worked as a kennel technician and receptionist, and what stayed with me most was the opportunity to provide comfort, patience, and affection to dogs during an uncertain time in their lives. Since then, my experience has taken me through boarding/daycare facilities, grooming salons, board-and-train facilities, and professional dog training. But one dog changed the direction of that journey completely. Meet Remi 🐾 Remington came into my life as an eight-week-old puppy in 2022, and the connection was immediate. I began lightly training her from the time she came home and eventually trained her to become my task-trained service dog. Working so closely with Remi made me want to understand dogs beyond commands and obedience. I wanted to understand why they behave the way they do, what they communicate through their bodies, how they experience stress, and how I could become better at listening to them. That curiosity led me to pursue professional education through CATCH Canine Trainers Academy in canine psychology, body language, and behavior modification. I went on to spend roughly three years training dogs professionally. Along the way, I learned something important about myself: dog training wasn’t where my heart ultimately belonged. The knowledge was. I wanted to use what I had learned to advocate for dogs, recognize what they were communicating, and help parents understand the animal standing in front of them. Why Mutt Makeovers Exists 🌿 While working in traditional grooming and boarding environments, I began noticing ways the experience could be different. Grooming doesn’t happen to a dog. It happens with a dog. Dogs communicate throughout the entire process. They tell us when they’re uncomfortable, overwhelmed, frightened, tired, curious, gaining confidence, or beginning to trust us. I wanted to create a grooming environment where those signals weren’t treated as inconveniences, but as information worth listening to. That’s where Mutt Makeovers began. My goal is to provide a calmer, more compassionate grooming experience grounded in canine behavior and individualized care. I work one-on-one with pup-clients so I can pay attention to the dog in front of me rather than asking every dog to adapt to the pace and noise of a busy salon. Sometimes that means treats and toys. Sometimes it means changing my handling technique, giving a dog a break, slowing down, modifying part of a service, or helping a pup-parent recognize something their dog has been communicating. And sometimes it simply means sitting on the floor for a minute and letting a nervous dog decide that I’m safe. I want Mutt Makeovers to feel less like an assembly-line grooming salon and more like what the name Dog Spa should mean: thoughtful care for the whole dog. I want dogs to have a voice here. More Than a Groom ✨ Of course, I love sending home a freshly groomed dog who looks beautiful. But what matters just as much to me is how that dog experienced the process. If I can help a nervous dog become a little more confident, notice something affecting a dog’s comfort that their family hadn’t seen, helping a parent recognize something their dog has been communicating, or simply give a dog a safe place where their boundaries are respected, I’ve accomplished something much bigger than a haircut. Animals have shaped my life from the beginning. Getting to care for them, advocate for them, and help the people who love them is exactly what I want Mutt Makeovers to stand for. Every dog deserves to be seen, heard, respected, and cared for as an individual. 🌿 Nurture. Transform. Connect. 🌿

Humane Handling & Behavioral Safety Mutt Makeovers uses individualized handling, positive reinforcement, breaks, and reasonable accommodations whenever appropriate. However, no service or desired haircut takes priority over a dog’s health, safety, or welfare. Services may be modified or discontinued if a dog becomes excessively stressed, physically fatigued, unsafe to handle, or unable to comfortably tolerate part of the grooming process. Parents will be informed when significant concerns, limitations, or service modifications occur. Emergency Veterinary Care If a medical emergency occurs during an appointment, reasonable efforts will be made to contact the pup’s parent or emergency contact. The parent is responsible for veterinary expenses except where otherwise required by law. Reasons may include unsafe behavior, excessive stress, medical concerns, severe coat condition, illness, parasites, contagious conditions, unmet vaccination requirements, inability to safely or humanely perform the requested service, policy violations, repeated No-Shows or late pickups, or unresolved balances.
